Diocese of San Diego

POLICY ON THE ONGOING FORMATION OF PRIESTS

I. The following is a list of those days which are to be provided annually for all priests of the Diocese of San Diego active in the diocese as well as non-incardinated diocesan priests and religious order priests with diocesan assignments:

A. Not less than four days and up to eight days for an annual RETREAT and up to five days for the annual CONVOCATION OF PRIESTS. Participation is required. If not covered by the diocese, source of salary shall pay convocation expenses and up to $500.00 for retreat expenses.

B. Two days for diocesan sponsored DAYS OF PRAYER or ASSEMBLIES of priests. If not covered by the diocese, source of salary shall pay for participation which is expected.

C. Up to ten days for DIOCESAN SPONSORED INSERVICE and FREELY CHOSEN PROGRAMS FOR PASTORAL DEVELOPMENT. Source of salary shall pay up to $500.00 annually for participation in these opportunities which is encouraged.

D. Up to 12 days for JESUS CARITAS or SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS. Expenses for these days are the responsibility of the priest.

II. Expenses are paid by the diocese for WORKSHOPS AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS which may be required for:

newly ordained priests;
priests needing inculturation assistance;
new pastors;
priests approaching retirement;
retired priests.

III. Every seven years, a SABBATICAL LEAVE of up to four months in a program approved by the Office for Priests is encouraged. Expenses for sabbatical programs are divided as follows: 1/2 by the diocese, 1/4 by the source of salary, 1/4 by the priest.

IV. LANGUAGE STUDIES and ADVANCED STUDIES, approved by the bishop, are paid for by the diocese.
