POLICY ON RESERVE MILITARY CHAPLAINS

A priest may serve as a reserve military chaplain only with the permission of the bishop.

To the extent that reserve training and duty is on the priest’s weekly day(s) off or is counted against vacation time, the priest may keep the government stipend he receives. When this is the case, substitution, if necessary, although to be arranged by the priest, is to be paid by the parish or institution to which he is assigned. Otherwise, time away from the priest’s diocesan assignment for reserve training and duty is without pay from his source of salary. And in this case substitution, if necessary, is both to be arranged for and to be paid by the priest.
