1936 The Diocese of San Diego was formed from the former Los Angeles- San Diego Diocese.
Bishop Charles Francis Buddy of St. Joseph, Missouri was installed as the first Bishop of San Diego.
 
1949

University of San Diego
- Charter received.
- Land overlooking both San Diego and Mission Bay purchased.
- Purchased land becomes Alcala Park as a tribute to the city's patron, St. Didacus of Alcala.
- Religiouis of the Sacred Heart invited to open the first unit of the university.
 

1954 Founding of the College for Men and the Knights of Columbus Memorial Library.
Immaculate Heart Seminary and St. Francis de Sales Collegiate Seminary transferred from El Cajon to Alcala Park.
 
1956 Bishop Richard H. Ackerman appointed Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego.

1960 Bishop Ackerman leaves San Diego to become Ordinary of Covington, Kentucky.
  
1966

Bishop Buddy passes away.
Bishop Francis J. Furey installed as Bishop of San Diego.
   

1967 Bishop John R. Quinn appointed Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego.
   
1969 Bishop Furey leaves San Diego to become seventh Ordinary and third Archbishop of San Antonio, Texas.
Bishop Leo Thomas Maher becomes Bishop of San Diego.
 
1971 Bishop Quinn leaves San Diego to become Bishop of Oklahoma City and Tulsa.

1974 Bishop Gilbert E. Chavez appointed Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego, the second Mexican American priest to be elevated to this office in the United States.
 
1973 - 1976 The second Diocesan Synod convened to review and renew statutes and guidelines of the Diocese in keeping with the Directives of Vatican II.
 
1976 The First Diocesan Pastoral Council formed as a direct result of the Second Synod.
 
1989 Bishop Robert H. Brom is appointed Bishop of San Diego.
 
2002 Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone is appointed Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego.
 
2009 Bishop Salvatore J. Cordileone leaves San Diego to become Bishop of Oakland.
